Sunday, April 05, 2009 – Mom – Today, we started church with 7 people. The BYU teachers had a cruise on the Yangze River. We and the Ortons did not go on this tour. The branch president and his wife are in Australia blessing their first grandchild. During the Sacrament song, the Blisset family of 5 came in. The father is a member, who has been inactive, and he and his family are taking the lessons and have all committed to be baptized. We are excited. They are excited too because every week they invite people to come to church. They brought 6 extra people with them this week. One was a family of four from Kenya. The little boy, Warren is 5 years old and Salma is two years old. The mother, Lucy, came to primary with us. The little boy knew all about Easter, Jesus, and that he died on the cross for us. It was a fun and a special day in Primary. Afterwards, we had the 3 Britton boys, Caleb – 16; Isaac – 13; and Curtis – 11, for lunch, since they are on their own this week. We had chicken vegetable soup and rice krispie treats – and they are a treat over here!!!
Monday, April 6, 2009 – Dad – We, along with the Orton’s, went to the Muslim Market to purchase some items. The Orton’s bought a figurine, a Chinese instrument, and robes for all of their grandchildren. Mom and I bought a mirror for her, a Chinese robe with dragons on for me and two robes for her also with dragons on them. Mine is reversible – from black to red. Then to have our feet shaved. I got my excess callous shaved off my feet, they are baby smooth and Mom had a foot and leg message using the pressure points of the feet. Cost was $7 for both. We then tried our first soft ice cream on the economy. They were vanilla and tasted quite good. Cost was 25 cents for both. A nice spring day.
Tuesday, April 7, 2009 – Mom – Our classes today were very interesting. The students were assigned to show us “how to do” something. This was not easy for them because they had to learn different English words to explain how to do something. They did a good job and there was quite a variety. Many of the students are very good at origami and it is amazing what they can create from a square piece of paper. I received hearts, birds, a fox, a tree, flowers, airplanes, little baskets, letters “W” and “V”, boat, pine tree, tower, butterfly, and little tiny stars. They were creative and I thought it was a fun lesson. One girl brought her cross stitch to show and then she presented me with a little cross stitch decoration that she made over the weekend to give to me.
Wednesday, April 8, 2009 – Dad – After class we took a taxi to be with the Britton boys. The boys are 17, 14 and 11 and staying home while their mom and dad are in Australia during this week to see their first grandchild. We, along with some of the other couples in the branch, volunteered to be with them for a short period of time. We chose Wednesday – so, today we took them to the market close to them which has lots of material. Edith wanted to purchase and have pillow cases made to leave here since the ones we have are terrible. And, she purchased material for two blouses. After the shopping spree we took the boys to get hamburgers, French fries and a drink. It almost tasted like those in the USA.
Thursday, April 9, 2009 – Mom – The students are being very creative with their demonstrations. During the break, one of the girls, named Susan, told me that she had just gotten a job at a supermarket and had asked a man in English if she could help him. The man was so happy that she spoke English to him and that made her feel happy. After she told me that, she added that she liked my eyes and then asked to see my eye makeup. I took off my glasses and blinked several times for her. She smiled and said that my make up was very beautiful. So I must thank my daughters and daughter-in-laws, who help me look more “beautiful.” I don’t think I have any students who wear eye makeup. We also had a little rain. We started out on a walk and after a half hour, I needed to get back to the apartment and my toilet that had a seat and toilet paper. Dad was asked to help administer to Helena. We had tomato soup for dinner and then went for our walk to the grocery store and to the dirt market to buy another electric curler. Mine stopped working yesterday. Next week, we will be going on a 3-day tour with the university, so I bought a hat to shade my head and eyes from the sun!! It sounds like we will be climbing mountains again.
Friday, April 10, 2009 – Dad - On our way to school, traffic was blocked on both sides as a huge bus was turning around right in the middle of the road. I couldn’t believe it! As we walk each day, we see many old pool tables by several of the stores. Men and boys are playing on the tables all the time. They are left out in the rain, snow, sun, every kind of weather and yet they seem to hold up. The cost of a game is $.20 – want to play? Last evening we had a cottage meeting held at Bro. and Sis. Blissett’s home. We invited Vincent (we met him on the flight to Hong Kong last January) to attend with us. There were 10 investigators and five members. Our mission leader, Mark, spoke briefly about the restoration and then treats. We invited all to Sunday General Session of Conference to be held at the Blissets followed by a potluck. Of the investigators: 6 from the Philippines, one from Taiwan, one from the US, one from New Zealand and one from India. Wow! We hope they all come unto Christ.
Saturday, April 11, 2009 – Mom – We traveled by taxi to the Brittons home to watch the 1st session of General Conference. I went with the Ortons and Helena because Dad found it necessary to stay close to a toilet this morning. The rest of the day has been fine for him. After the morning session, those of us in attendance walked 10 minutes to Pizza Hut for lunch. It was my first visit there since arriving in China 8 months ago. It tasted very good. I bought a small pizza, so that I was able to bring some home to Dad. In one of Dad’s classes this week, a girl was demonstrating how to do yoga and asked a couple of girls to help her. They were raising their hands above their head for the demonstration and one of the girls’ shirt raised up and revealed her waist. Dad said several of the girls sitting in the class rushed up to hold her shirt down while she completed the exercise. This shows that modesty is still very important to the girls here. The branch president decided to show the Priesthood session of conference during the next two Sundays during Priesthood class time.
